Word Documents related to the Acronyms:

(Listed in alphabetical order.)

CDE: California Department of Education.

CEO: A Character Education Officer is a student who was nominated by one of his/her teachers or who was specially invited to become a leader in Character Education and serve as an example of good character on campus. CEOs organize conscious efforts and activities to promote Character Education at OA in their monthly meetings. They are responsible for recognizing good character in others through awards, notes, and small gifts distributed to deserving OACMs throughout the year.

CIA: Caught in the Act! OACMs who are seen, or “caught”, doing a good deed or a random act of kindness on campus or in school-related events are recognized through the CIA Program. Anyone can fill out a nomination form, located in the Activities office, and those who are nominated receive a small gift and are recognized for their positive display of character in the CEO display case and on the morning announcements.

ELA: English Language Arts (K-12 Content Standards), a required class for all students in all grades at OA.

FAFSA: De-Stress Days is a 2-day celebration at the end of the year, after all standardized testing has been completed. Extended lunch periods become relaxing retreats for mellowing out, or energetic escapes from the humdrum daily routine. The CEOs organize events for all students including fingerpainting, playdoh sculpting, yoga- and kickboxing-in-the-quad, manicures, and organic facials. The highlight is Friday’s Auction of Faculty, Staff, and Administrators, our biggest (and only) FUNdraiser in which adults offer to make lunches, organize binders, wash cars, take notes, run the mile, and transport students to class, all in the name of fun! Proceeds go to a character-related cause.

HSA: Each year the PTSA organizes and gives out Honorary Service Awards to OACM adults who have given of their time & energy to OA students. During this ceremony, the CEOs present the POC Awards to outstanding faculty, staff and parents for exhibiting the MAGC at OA events!

ICE: Institute for Character Education at the OCDE.

MAGC: The Monthly Attributes of Good Character are AUHSD-aligned and based on six pillars of character (see TRRFCC below). Each classroom has a flyer displayed prominently with this information on it:

    September/October: Character & Responsibility
November (Character Month!): Attitude & Gratitude
    December/January: Caring & Respect
    February: Citizenship
    March/April: Honesty & Trustworthiness
    May/June: Fairness & Perseverance

OA: Oxford Academy, a college preparatory public secondary school (grades 7-12) in the AUHSD, serving students since 1998.

OACM: Oxford Academy Community Members include everyone who is involved in OA - students, parents, teachers, staff members, administrators, community members, and others who have the opportunity to interact with our students in school-related events.

OCDE: Orange County Department of Education.

P.E.: Physical Education (K-12 Framework, .pdf), a required course for all OA students grades 7-10.

POC: A Patriot of Character is a OACM who exhibits and models the MAGC regularly at all OA functions. The Patriot of Character Awards are given during the PTSA-sponsored Honorary Service Awards Night to OACM adults (faculty, staff, and parents) who are wonderful examples of strong character.

PTSA: Our amazing Parent/Teacher/Student Association (CA PTA website) has a membership that exceeds the number of students in the school! They are amazing. They actively support students, teachers, staff, and other parent groups on campus through volunteer efforts, grant opportunities, and enriching programs. The PTSA posts Event/Activity Announcements regularly on the OA Communication Center website.

SOM: Student of the Month! Teachers select high-achieving students who also exhibit great character to honor with a certificate in an award ceremony during Enrichment, six times a school year. These awards are based on the students’ academic achievement as well as their demonstration of the MAGC.

TRRFCC: Related to the MAGC, TRRFCC is an acronym to help all OACMs remember some of the positive attributes of character, such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. One small gift given to deserving OACMs by CEOs is a TRRFCC gold pencil!
